Ruth S. Harley University Center Renovation and Addition,
Modernized Student Center
As Adelphi University’s student body grows, and with more students choosing to live on campus, it became necessary to expand the 74,000 sf Ruth S. Harley University Center, a 1972 student center on their Garden City, NY campus. The renovation and 18,000 sf expansion project includes an updated art gallery space; a much larger dining area; expanded multi-use meeting/academic space; an expanded commuter lounge; a large new Wellness Center; and a Starbucks; as well as an outdoor space for dining, outdoor classes or lounging. Overall, the extensive use of glass walls will create a light, airy space out of the current “fortress-like” building. The new addition, independent of the existing, features two wings comprised of composite steel framing and moment frames for the lateral system. The additions modernize and join the buildings into a cohesive university center.
