Building on an Historic Foundation

This 14-story, 177,000 square foot steel frame hotel at the corner of Broad and Locust Streets features 223 rooms as well as a fitness center, banquet room, several restaurants and a rooftop lounge.

The foundation construction was a complicated endeavor. During the demolition and excavation of the parking garage that had recently inhabited the site, an existing two-level basement was discovered underneath that was part of an 1800s office building. Also uncovered were a boiler plant for the office building and concourse tunnels that connected to the subway system. The basement and tunnels had been abandoned and covered over with the construction of the garage. In order to continue with construction, it was necessary to circumvent these existing cavities under the site by threading new caissons around the abandoned tunnels and caissons. A partial mat foundation covered and entombed the two-level basement.
