THG Leadership Spotlight: Getting to Know Christopher Gottschall

When did you join The Harman Group?

I joined the firm in January 2001.

Do you have a favorite project that you have worked on with The Harman Group?

I actually have a few favorite projects that I’ve worked on with The Harman Group. The impressive additions we did for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia were extremely rewarding, as the project contained two phases and over 792,000 square-feet of construction. East Market and The Harper were also fantastic projects to be a part of.

What do you enjoy most about working at The Harman Group?

At The Harman Group, we work on a variety of unique projects, from smaller renovation jobs to million square foot hospitality giants, ranging from one story additions to skyline-defining projects. There is truly never a dull moment at THG.

Is there a dream project that you would like to work on?

Working on any project that helps to redefine the iconic skyline of Philadelphia is a dream for me.

What is your favorite/most challenging part of your job?

My favorite and the most challenging part of my job is working with the contractors. The process can be enjoyable and very challenging at the same time. There is a lot of personality!

What industry trend is most exciting to you right now?

The most fascinating industry trend to me right now is sensitivity to carbon footprint, specifically using more recycled materials, such as cement alternatives. The manufacturing of cement is a leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions. If we can build strong and durable buildings with less cement, it is a win win for the planet, and everyone involved.

Can you share a story about what you feel is one of your biggest professional career accomplishments?

I don’t know if I can pinpoint a specific story because there is a sense of great accomplishment with every project I work on. Delivering projects with challenging geometry, multiple (possibly conflicting) uses and tight budgets are the most challenging, but also the most rewarding.

Outside of your work, are you involved in any other organizations or nonprofits?

Wait, people have time for things outside of work?

What is your favorite out of work activity?

I love ocean kayaking, driving my Miata on various racetracks all over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region, shooting sports (particularly trap and sporting clays) and cooking. Oh, and I also love training my small army of cats.

What don’t most people know about you?

I’m batman.
